Lansing Insulation Contractors
Insulation is one of the most important features of your home. Not only will it help to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, it will help to keep your utility bills low, saving you money. Insulation is an improvement you can make to your home that will often pay for itself in reduced utility bills over a number of years. A properly insulated home costs less to maintain year after year.
In general, the better insulated your home is, the lower your energy bills will be.
While thermodynamics is an extremely complicated subject, it’s helpful for the average homeowner to know a bit about how heat and air travels. The universe abhors a vacuum, as they say, and is consistently attempting to even itself out. If your home is warm on the inside while it’s cold on the outside, for example, that warm and cold air is just dying to mix and create a balance in temperature.
Insulation acts as a barrier to help slow and stop this mixing. The more warm air you can keep and hold in your home, the less hard your furnace or boiler must work, the less often it will be burning fossil fuels, resulting in lower heating bills.
Different Types of Insulation for Your Home In Lansing
Insulation comes in many different forms, each suited to a particular application with benefits and drawbacks for each.
The two main types of insulation we use at Premier Home Solutions are blown-in cellulose insulation, primarily used in attics, and spray foam insulation, used most everywhere else, like walls and crawl spaces.
Cellulose insulation is a wood or paper based product, consisting of loose, fluffy flakes. It is mechanically blown into wall cavities or the space between your ceiling joists with a machine. It is particularly useful in attics for it’s cost, ease of use, and effectiveness.
Unfortunately cellulose is not as useful in walls, as it can settle into itself leaving an uninsulated gap at the top of the wall, nor is it as useful in other areas of the home like crawl spaces that can get wet, damaging the product.
This is where spray foam comes in. The gold standard for insulation properties, spray foam is pumped into your wall cavities from the outside of the home (or against naked studs in new construction or renovation) and completely fills wall and joist cavities creating an airtight seal. The material is particularly good as an insulator, stops air leaks, and it will even add some rigidity to the structure of your home.
Best of all, our proprietary spray foam comes with a lifetime guarantee. That’s right, you don’t have to worry about the hardened foam crumbling or getting old, just peace of mind that it works and will be taken care of if something ever happens.
